In this article, we will learn how to calculate land area in Excel.

Here, we will describe two easiest way to calculate the area of irregular shaped land based on the the following criteria:

- When sides of irregular land are known
- When coordinates of irregular land are known

## Calculate Land Area in Excel When the Sides of Irregular Land are Known:

Suppose you measured the length of all sides of an irregularly shaped land as below.

Now you can easily calculate the land area by dividing the total land area into triangles, as shown in the picture.

**You should know the following theory to calculate the area of the triangles.**

Step 01: Let’s write a formula in Excel to calculate the area of **triangle A1**.

- Enter the following formula in the cell
**C4**to calculate the perimeter of the**Triangle A1**

`=(F4+F5+F6)/2`

Where, Cell **F4**, **F5**, and** F6** contains the length of three side of** triangle A1**

- Enter the following formula in the cell
**C5**to calculate the area of the**Triangle A1**

`=SQRT(C4*(C4-F4)*(C4-F5)*(C4-F6))`

Similarly, calculate the area of the **Triangle A2**

Step 02: As we divided the total land area into two triangles, the total land area is the sum of the areas of both triangles.

Enter the following formula in the output cell **D13**

`=C10+C5`

Where cells **C5** and **C10** contain the area of **triangles A1 **and** A2**, respectively.

If you get the more complicated shaped land, you have to increase the number of triangles and modify the Excel formula accordingly.

## Calculate Land Area in Excel When the Co-ordinates of Irregular Land are Known:

Suppose you measured the coordinates of the land and noted them as shown below.

**You should know the following theory to calculate the area when you know the coordinates:**

Let’s do the calculation in Excel

**Step 01: **Create two columns named X and Y and enlist the coordinates in anticlockwise. Repeat once the 1st coordinate in the last row of data .

Step 02: Enter the following formula in the output cell **E8**

`=ABS(SUM(B5:B8*C6:C9-C5:C8*B6:B9))`

Step 04: Apply the following formula to get the area in cell **E11**

`=E8*0.5`

Alternative formula:

One single formula to get the same result

`=0.5*(SUMPRODUCT(B5:B8,C6:C9)-SUMPRODUCT(C5:C8,B6:B9))`

Here, we worked with four points of irregularly shaped land. If you need to calculate the area of the land that has more vertex points, you need to modify the formula accordingly.
