Shade Area Between Two Lines Excel

In this article, we will show how to shade an area between two lines in Excel.

A sample output of this tutorial is given below:

We will divide the total steps into three sections

  1. Creating a Data Table to Make a Chart 
  2. Create a Chart
  3. Shade Area Between Two Lines in Excel

Suppose you are given a data table containing actual and target sales quantities. You want to show the difference between actual and target sell quantity

Section A. Creating a Data Table to Make a Chart 

Step 01: Create a new column named “Base.” And Copy the actual data from the column B by applying the formula given below

Step 02: Create a new column named “Difference.” Then input the following formula in the cell E2 and AutoFill

=C2-B2

Section B. Create a Chart

Step 03: Select the data range B1:E9 and navigate to the Input tab

Step 04: From the chart section, Select the Line chart

Section C: Shade Area Between Two Lines in Excel

Step 05: Keeping the mouse pointer on the chart, right-click on the mouse.

Step 06: Click on the Change Chart type.

Step 07: A window named “Change Chart Type” will appear. Click on the “Combo” option. 

Step 08: Click on the Icon of the Chart type for the Actual series and select Line

Similarly, Change charts for the Target series to Line

Step 09: Again, Click on the Icon of the Chart type for the Base series and select Stacked Area

Similarly, change the charts for the Difference series to the Stacked Area. Then press OK

Step 10: Double-click on the lower portion (gray area) of the chart, and the Format Data Series tab will appear.

Step 11: Click on Fill and Line, Then from the Fill options, click on No Fill

The result is

Step 12: Now, click on the data label “Base” and press Delete. Similarly, delete the data label “Difference.”
